After the Storm — Options for Corn and Soybean

• Planting Cover Crops into Storm-Damaged Fields. Cover crops offer a number of benefits to hailed corn and soybean fields. Consider potential herbicide carryover  and the unique attributes of various cover crops when selecting seed.
• Tips for Planting Fall Forages and Other Salvage Uses. Timing and crop selection are critical to making the best use of the rest of the season for forage production.
• Southern Rust and the Dilemma of Managing Storm-Damaged Corn. There are conflicting results among researchers on the value of a preventative fungicide treatment in damaged corn. See more on this and the status of corn diseases across the state.
• Forage Options with Damaged Corn. While chopping silage is one of the most common solutions for storm-damaged corn, standing corn is likely now at 80% moisture. Learn how much grain or hay it takes to lower moisture to just 70%.
• Flying Turnips or Rye into Corn and Beans. When successful, turnips or rye can provide more grazing days and extra protein when residue quality diminishes.

Soybean Production

• Stem and Root Rots Are Appearing in Soybeans a little earlier than usual this year. Learn how to differentiate these diseases from SDS and to plan for management.
