Panhandle REC Studying Sugar Beet Storage Treatments

Four post-harvest sugar beet fungicide treatments are being evaluated as part of a new research study underway at the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff. The study, which is looking at whether fungicide treatments can improve winter storability of beets, is being conducted with support from Syngenta and Western Sugar Cooperative.

New Soils and Nutrient Management Specialist Joins Panhandle REC

Bijesh Maharjan will join the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research and Extension Center Sept. 6 as soil and nutrient management specialist. He will conduct research and extension programs focused on improved soil productivity and precision nutrient management in irrigated, limited-irrigation, and rainfed crop and forage production systems in the Panhandle.

“Making Sustainable Agriculture Profitable” is the title of a seminar to be presented Aug. 18 at the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff.

The speaker will be Carrie Eberle, who was recently hired by the University of Wyoming and is based at the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) in Lingle, Wyo.

Dipak Santra, alternative crops breeding specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research and Extension Center, will give a presentation on July 21 about millet, an ancient grain in modern agriculture and global food security. He will also provide a glimpse of his home country of India, including its agriculture, economy, and culture.
