Randy Pryor, Extension Educator in Saline County: Soybean planting came to a halt with 0.85 to 1.10 inches in Saline County. Most of Gage County remained dry enough for spraying and planting to continue. Corn planting is essentially done except for wet pockets in certain fields.

With cool, rainy conditions, planting progress was slow last week and remains behind normal, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service report for Nebraska. There were just 2.2 days suitable for fieldwork.

Only 27% of Corn, 7% of Soybean Emerged May 21, 2019

With several sunny days last week planting progressed with 70% of corn and 40% of soybeans now planted. Continued progress will likely be delayed in many areas where there was rain and even snow early this week.

USDA NASS: Corn Planting at 46%, Soybean at 20% May 13, 2019

As of Sunday 46% of the state's corn was planted, up from 35% last week, but well behind the five-year average of 72%. Approximately 20% of soybean had been planted, up from 14% last week, but well behind the average of 32%.

Planting Progress and Wheat Condition, May 5, 2019 May 7, 2019

Corn planting was at 35% as of May 5, up from just 16% the week before, reported the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). In soybeans, 14% was planted, compared to just 3% last week. Progress is similar to 2018, but lags the five-year average.

USDA Census: Nebraska Farms Down 7% from 2012 April 11, 2019

This week USDA released its 2017 ag census data, noting that while the number of farms in Nebraska had dropped 7% from 2012 to 2017, the area of land in farms had only dropped 1%.
