“Farmers and ranchers have a critical insight when it comes to improving their system,” notes the website for the Farmer Rancher Grant Program offered by the North Central Region of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) Program. That’s why they are offering a grant program to farmers and ranchers who would like to explore sustainable solutions through on-farm research, demonstration, or education projects.

If you’d like to learn more about the program and Nebraska projects that were successfully funded, as well as glean tips for preparing your own proposal, plan to view a webinar this Thursday, November 7 at 10 a.m. CT. (It also will be recorded for later viewing.)

The host and speaker will be Gary Lesoing, Nebraska State SARE Coordinator and Nebraska Extension Educator. Lesoing will cover the basics of the program and how to prepare and submit a grant application. If you have questions or need further information, contact Lesoing at glesoing2@unl.edu or (402) 274-4755.

NCR-SARE has allocated about $720,000 for the 2020 Farmer Rancher Grant Program for three types of competitive grants:

  1. Individual grants ($9,000 maximum)
  2. Team of Two grants for two farmers/ranchers from separate and distinct operations who are working together ($18,000 maximum)
  3. Group grants for three or more farmers/ranchers from separate and distinct operations who are working together ($27,000 maximum).

A number of projects have been funded in Nebraska since the program’s inception in 1992. Application information and the call for proposals for 2020 grants is available on the NCR-SARE Farmer Rancher Grant Program website. Proposals are due December 5.
