Welcome moisture finally fell across much of Nebraska August 14-16, helping alleviate moisture stress, particularly in areas of south central, central, and east central Nebraska. As producers enter the final stretch of the 2009 production season, it is time to look at some of the climatic issues that could still have an impact on yields.

Learn more about using cover crops and the impact of no-till cropping in building soil quality at a field day this Thursday (Sept. 3). It will be held on the Ben Staffen farm, 1/4 mile west of 637 Avenue (Steffen Park) and Highway 4 near Humboldt. A rainfall simulator and soil pit will be used during the demonstration segments.

The UNL South Central Agricultural Laboratory (SCAL) will be hosting the fourth in a series of crop clinics this Thursday, Sept. 3. If soil moisture loss and yield reductions weren't enough reason to provide timely control of volunteer corn, researchers have now found another motivator. A recent Midwest study suggests that rootworm feeding of Bt volunteer corn could lead to the development of corn rootworm resistance to this technology.
