UNL Appoints Alternative Crop Breeding Specialist in Panhandle

Dipak Santra has been appointed alternative crop breeding specialist at UNL's Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff. Santra is scheduled to start Nov. 1. He fills a position vacated by David Baltensperger who became chair of the Agronomy and Soils Department at Texas A & M University.

Brazil offers numerous opportunities in food and biofuels. Marcos Fava Neve, University of San Paulo professor of strategy, says exports are growing, with beef cattle becoming an important export commodity. The country's sugarcane crop has been used in ethanol production since 1971.

Bacterial Blight Common in Soybeans

Frequent rains and stormy conditions have resulted in bacterial blight being prevalent this year in soybean fields. Bacterial blight caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea is present across Nebraska.
