A short review of cover crop research conducted at four University of Nebraska research fields (two irrigated, two dryland) to study the feasibility and impact of winter cover cropping on soil quality, soil water, and crop yields in corn-soybean systems. Objectives were to quantify cover crop emergence, fall and spring biomass production, soil water changes, soil chemical and physical property changes, and crop yields.

Test for SCN This Fall & Select Seed Accordingly

If you noticed some areas of your soybean fields that didn't yield as well as expected, this fall would be a good time to soil test for soybean cyst nematode. In University of Nebraska research of SCN-infested fields, switching to an SCN-resistant variety increased yields as much as 6 bu/ac.

Help Us Identify Yield-Limiting Factors in Nebraska Soybean Fields

Nebraska soybean producers are being asked to answer a survey about their soybean fields and contribute to a benchmark study of current soybean production in Nebraska. Researchers from 10 north central states, including Nebraska, are collecting the data to identify factors that may be impeding growers from reaching full yield. See what they've learned in the first two years of the study and how they hope to use the information.

Soybean Stem Borers Feeding in South Central Nebraska

We are starting to see dead leaves caused by feeding of soybean stem borer larvae in south central Nebraska soybeans. No control measures are appropriate at this time, but monitor your fields and be aware that high populations of soybean stem borers may predispose the field to lodging and make harvest difficult.
