Crop production students interested in crop water use and irrigation management will want to check out the new Agricultural Water Management Guide, an interactive, online resource developed by Nebraska Extension.

This free guide describes the leading types of irrigation systems, including advantages and disadvantages of each, water management technologies and strategies, and the history of irrigation in Nebraska, the nation’s leading user.

With easily accessible information, videos, and pull-out boxes for “Did you Knows” and terminology definitions, this guide serves as an excellent introduction to the use and management of irrigation in Nebraska. In addition, links throughout the guide will aid readers wanting to delve deeper into particular areas through recommended sources.

“This resource is written for farmers, crop consultants, agriculture teachers, science instructors, students, and anyone interested in increasing their knowledge of irrigation management,” said Nebraska Extension Educator Brandy VanDeWalle, one of the co-authors.

“We wanted this to be a one-stop resource for those with irrigation questions. Readers will find key information about different types of irrigation, how to determine irrigation timing, and much more. It also links to Nebraska Extension publications with more technical information.”

Co-authors with VanDeWalle are Extension Educators Aaron Nygren, Chuck Burr, and Gary Zoubek, and Extension Irrigation Specialist Suat Irmak.

VanDeWalle is developing STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) lessons for mid and senior high youth that incorporate use of the guide.

The Nebraska Environmental Trust provided funding and support for development of this resource, a direct result of the Excellence in Ag Sciences Day professional development conference series focused on agricultural water management.
