The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) announced today that Nebraska will receive additional funding from USDA to aid the state’s organic producers and processors with certification costs.

During early fall alfalfa plants detect the decreasing sunlight and adjust their growth process to winterize themselves.
If you cut alfalfa during this winterizing period, the plant begins to regrow. This reduces its ability to become as fully winterized as it would be without a cutting.

Ground that lies bare for eight to nine months following early corn and bean harvests has two things working against it. One is exposure to wind and water erosion. The second is that it’s not growing anything.
In both instances, cover crops might be the solution.
