On this week's Market Journal, host Doug Jose discusses crop insurance and replanting options with Rob Heyen of Crop Insurance Solutions. Heyen says replanting is still an option for corn and soybeans, but recommends that farmers check with the agent before starting.  He also recommends production hail coverage to supplement yield or revenue coverage.

• Grain Market Update — Wade Johannes, Commodity Risk Manager with Central Valley Ag, says the grain markets had a lot of promise until a couple of weeks ago. Now, there is much uncertainty and exports are slowing down.
   
• Insects and Diseases — Jeff Bradshaw, UNL Extension entomologist, collects insects at different locations and heights, which can lead to determining how they transfer viruses to crops. Bradshaw’s research can help plant breeders develop disease resistant varieties.
   
• Western Nebraska Irrigation Strategies — Dean Yonts, UNL Extension irrigation engineer, says his experiments indicate that sugarbeet yields can be maintained with irrigation at 50 to 75% of evapotranspiration needs if they are planted into a full soil moisture profile. For dry beans the cutoff is about 75%.
   
• Ag Weather — Al Dutcher, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension statewide climatologist, says Nebraska could see temps in the 90s going through the weekend and into next week.

Next Week

The start of increased grain prices last year can be traced back to the June 30 USDA report of planted acreage and grain stocks. Market Journal will look at the 2011 report to be released this Thursday and the tone it will set for markets this summer.
