August 9, 2013

UNL will host a West Central Crops and Water Field Day on August 22 at the West Central Resources Field Laboratory near Brule. The focus will be on irrigation practices and cropping systems that maintain or increase crop production while conserving water.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Mountain Time and there will be programming from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In the morning, presentations will include

  • the impact of tillage practices on crop evapotranspiration
  • a weather update from state climatologist Al Dutcher.

Field tours in the afternoon will feature

  • variable rate irrigation,
  • residue and cover crops,
  • unmanned aerial vehicles for crop sensing, and
  • high clearance sprayers and applicators for precision agriculture.

While the event and lunch are free, participants are asked to register by August15, so plans can be made for meals, teaching resources, and tour logistics.
