Omaha Ag Outlook at Embassy Suites Old Market - UNL CropWatch, Nov. 22, 2013

Farmers and agribusiness professionals are invited to the Omaha Ag Outlook at Embassy Suites in Omaha's Old Market Dec. 6-7. This meeting is a joint effort of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Iowa State University.

The event will begin with a noon meal where Kate Brooks, UNL livestock marketing specialist, and Lee Schulz, ISU extension ag economist, will present a livestock market outlook.

Afternoon speakers and topics include

  • Brooks on marketing livestock in Nebraska;
  • Schulz on marketing livestock in Iowa;
  • Attorney Melissa O'Rourke, ISU extension, on the top 10 estate planning mistakes and how to avoid them; and
  • Kelvin Leibold, ISU extension farm management specialist, on the profitability in international agriculture.

That evening shuttles will be provided to the Agricultural and Economic Policy banquet at the Anderson O'Brien Art Gallery. Evening speakers will include Brad Lubben, UNL ag economist, who will address complications of the U.S. farm bill now in conference committee; and Nathan Kaufmann, assistant vice president and Omaha branch executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

Omaha Ag Outlook continues Saturday morning with a Grain and Oilseed Outlook led by Chad Hart, ISU extension economist and crops market specialist. Breakout discussion sessions by Hart, Lubben, and Kaufman will follow.

The conference will close with a summary and charge to the participants from Michael Boehlje, distinguished professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University. Boehlje is a fellow of the Agriculture and Applied Economics Association. The fundamental focus of his work has been to integrate concepts of economics, finance, and strategy to help solve problems of farm and agribusiness managers.
