UNL Extension will be hosting a No-till/Cover Crop Field Day Wednesday, August 27, at the Tom Howe farm west of Highway 75 in Richardson County. Howe has been practicing continuous no-till for about 20 years and has been incorporating cover crops into his cropping system, usually after wheat, and then grazing them. The site is 5 miles west of Hwy 75 on 718 Rd from the Stella corner, located at the corner of 718 Rd and 634 Ave in Richardson County.

The field day begins with registration at 9:30 a.m. followed by the program at 10 a.m. Several cover crop combinations have been planted at the site for evaluation after wheat harvest. Speakers will include:

• Lance Gunderson of Ward Laboratories in Kearney will discuss the "Haney Test," a new soil health test, and other tests and issues related to soil health.
• UNL Extension Agricultural Engineer Paul Jasa will discuss cover crops in no-till systems. 
• Neil Dominy, state soil scientist with NRCS, and other NRCS staff will conduct demonstrations on soil runoff and water infiltration and discuss other soil properties. 
• Extension Educator Gary Lesoing will be discussing different cover crops and their uses in cropping systems. 

The field day is sponsored in part by UNL Extension, UNL Extension in Nemaha County, and the NRCS.  Lunch will be served after the workshop.

Directions

From the east, the site is 5 miles west of Hwy 75 on 718 Rd from the Stella corner. 

From the south from Humboldt at 634 Ave and HWY 4 (intersection just west of Humboldt Implement Case IH) go 4 miles north to 718 RD.  The field is on the south side of the road.
