Cool, dry conditions across much of the western two-thirds of Nebraska allowed field work last week; however, grain moisture levels stayed above those safe for storage and slowed harvest, the National Agricultural Statistics Service reported today. Statewide, corn harvest was nearing three-fourths complete and soybean harvest was near finished. Millet harvest was slow in western Nebraska as sugarbeet harvest neared completion.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 6% very short, 21% short, 71% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 14% very short, 35% short, and 51% adequate with 0 surplus.

Crop Report

• Corn harvest was 71% done, well behind 97% last year, but ahead of the average of 66%. Nationally, in the 18 states producing 93% of the 2012crop, harvest was 73% complete.
• Soybean harvest was 97% complete, behind 100% last year but ahead of 93% average. Nationally, in the 18 states producing 95% of the 2012 crop, harvest was 86% complete.
• Sorghum harvest was 77% complete, behind 93% last year but ahead of 59% average. Nationally, in the 11 states producing 98% of the 2012 crop, harvest was 75% complete.
• Winter wheat condition rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 26% fair, 62% good, and 7% excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 97%, ahead of 82% last year and 94% average.
• Proso millet was 91% harvested, behind 100% last year but near 93% average.
• The fourth cutting of alfalfa was 94% complete, behind 100% last year and 100% average.
• Pasture and range condition was 15% very poor, 22% poor, 34% fair, 27% good, and 2% excellent.
