USDA Reports: Crop Condition and 2006 Crop Value

favorable conditions early in the week allowed producers to get corn in the ground, but rains across most of the state late in the week forced farmers out of the fields, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistic Service, Nebraska Field Office. Storms in parts of Nebraska produced some wind and hail damage while heavy rains caused lowland flooding.
Wheat jointed was 64%, ahead of 60% last year and average.
Alfalfa condition also improved from last week and rated 5% very poor, 13% poor, 35% fair, 41% good, and 6% excellent, but remain well below last year's 75% good or excellent condition.
Oat condition rated 2% very poor, 4% poor, 32% fair, 53% good, and 9% excellent, behind last year's 70% good or excellent condition. Oat planting was 89% complete, behind the 97% of last year and average. Oats emerged was 65%, well behind last year's 78 and the five-year average of 80.
Sorghum planting began and was 1% complete, behind last year's 2% and the average of 3%.
