Market Journal: Purdue Agronomist Shares Recommendations

July 18, 2008

On this week's Market Journal guest Bob Nielson, Purdue University extension agronomist, discusses his recommendations for growing corn, including how to take advantage of one of your crop's most essential resources — sunlight. After tasseling, corn needs to capture 95% of the available sunlight. Only 5% or less of available sunlight should ever reach the ground, he says.

Also on the program this week:

  • Cattle markets — Mike Briggs, Briggs Feedyard, Seward;
  • Planning ahead for alfalfa cuttings — Bruce Anderson, UNL Extension forage specialist;
  • Implication of a wet spring on soil fertility and nitrogen levels — Charles Shapiro, UNL Extension soil fertility specialist and
  • Weather — Al Dutcher, Nebraska state climatologist
