State and National Cattle on Feed Down 5%

Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more headcontained 2.32 million cattle on feed on April 1, down5% from last year, according to USDA'sNational Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska FieldOffice.

Placements of cattle into feedlotsduring March totaled 360,000 head, the same as 2008. Fedcattle marketings for the month of March totaled365,000 head, down 6% from last year. Otherdisappearance during March totaled 5,000 compared with20,000 during March 2008.

Nationally, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the UnitedStates for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled11.2 million head on April 1, 2009. The inventory was5% below April 1, 2008. Placements in feedlots duringMarch totaled 1.80 million, 4% above 2008. Marketingsof fed cattle during March totaled 1.83 million,1% below 2008. Other disappearance totaled 50,000during March, 21% below 2008. This is the lowest number in the "Other disappearance" category for the month of March since the seriesbegan in 1996.
