UNL Wheat Tours Continue this Week

UNL winter wheat plot tours will continue this week in the Panhandle. They offer information on new wheat varieties, drought stress, wheat streak resistance, and other topics relevant to western Nebraska.

Wheat plots are located in Morrill, Dawes, Deuel, Cheyenne, Box Butte, and Scotts Bluff counties, and just across the Wyoming line. For more information on any of these tours, contact the extension educator in the host county.

 

Wheat Tours

June 22, 6 p.m. — Deuel County
Directions: From Highway 30 and Wheatland Drive on the west edge of Chappell, turn north, go north 8.5 miles on Road 165. The site is on the west side of road.

June 23, 9 a.m. — UNL High Plains Agricultural Laboratory
Directions: From Sidney, go 6 miles north on U.S. 385 or from Gurley, go 7 miles south on U.S. 385, 2.5 miles west at Huntsman elevator on Road 32, 0.5 miles north on Road 109, and 1 mile east on Road 32N. The Cheyenne County Dryland plot is on the central east side of Field #13. The Cheyenne County Organic plot is in the northwest corner of Field #3.

June 23, 3 p.m. — Box Butte County, Dryland
Directions: From Hemingford, take Highway 2 south about 5.5 miles to Hall Road, go west on Hall Road about 0.5 mile. The site is on the south side of road. (This is 0.2 west of Hall Road & Road 67.)

June 23, 5 p.m. — Box Butte County, Irrigated
Directions: Go 0.5 mile west of Hemingford on Highway 2, then 0.25 mile north on Road 71. The site is on the west side.

June 25, 10 a.m. — Scotts Bluff County
Directions: Take Highway 92 about 15 miles west of Gering to Stegall, take the Stegall Road 4 miles south to Co Road P, then go 1.8 miles west. The site is on the north side of road (about 0.2 mile east of Wheatland School).

June 25, 2 p.m. — Albin, Wyoming
Directions: From Albin, west 2.5 miles on Highway 216, then 2 miles south on Road 159, then 0.3 mile west on Road 227, then continue south 2 miles on Road 159, then west 3 miles to Road 156, turn north 0.7 mile. June 25, 4 p.m. — Pine Bluffs, Wyoming
Directions: From Pine Bluffs, go north 6 miles on Highway 215 or from Albin go 11 miles south and west at Mattson farm sign. Plots are on the east side of the road, south of the grain cleaning building. For more information call Jerry Nachtman at 307-575-1731 or Jim Krall at 307-837-2000.
