On this week's Market Journal UNL Extension Educator Jenny Rees talks with MJ host Jeff Wilkerson about what UNL models predict for corn yields given the late planting and cool early August conditions. Although Nebraska’s corn crop is in better shape than the national average, the UNL Hybrid Maize corn simulation model shows yields in late planted corn could "drop off rapidly" with an early frost. Soybean Diseases — Loren Giesler, UNL Extension plant pathologist, describes how to scout soybeans for phytophthora. Giesler also describes other diseases appearing in soybean.

Nebraska’s Ag Complex — Bruce Johnson, UNL professor of agricultural economics, discusses the current state of Nebraska’s livestock industry and its symbiotic relationship with grain production. Enhancing the "Golden Triangle" can help the state's ag industry grow its overall output. Weather Forecast — Al Dutcher, UNL Extension state climatologist, gives his forecast for the coming week: very warm with little precipitation through the end of the month.

Pasture and Range Update — Thirty-four percent of Nebraska’s pasture and range is rated as poor or very poor. Despite the low rating, Jerry Volesky, UNL Extension range and forage specialist, says forages in the Sandhills have improved since last year due to near normal precipitation.

Livestock Markets — The summer of 2012 was an expensive and difficult time for farmers and ranchers. Pastures are now in better shape, and a possible record fall harvest could be on the horizon. However, Jim Robb, Livestock Marketing Information Center, says the losses in the cattle industry are difficult to ignore.
