The 2011 Dry Bean Field Tour, scheduled for August 23, will be an opportunity to view the latest bean research at the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff.

The tour will start with coffee and registration at 9 a.m. at the Mitchell Ag Lab on Experiment Farm Road several miles north of the Panhandle REC. Following a welcome message and legislative update, research plot tours will leave at 9:30 a.m. A noon meal will be served at the Panhandle REC.

The field tour is co-sponsored by the Nebraska Dry Bean Growers’ Association and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Tour presentations will be on field research and demonstration projects on dry edible beans.

• Screening for resistance to rust and white mold, Jim Steadman, plant pathologist
• Influence of different levels of corn residue on pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide performance in dry beans, Robert Wilson, weed specialist
• Bean coordinate agricultural project experiments, Carlos Urrea, dry bean breeding specialist
• Drought experiments in beans, Carlos Urrea
• Breeding several market classes for western Nebraska, Carlos Urrea
• Unique strategies for pursuing insect resistance in dry beans, Jeff Bradshaw, entomologist
• Fertilizer management for no-till dry bean production with limited irrigation, Gary Hergert, soil and nutrient management specialist
• Use of iron chelate to improve dry bean production on high pH soils, Gary Hergert
• Planting dates, planting populations, and effects of defoliation on dry beans, Jim Schild, Extension educator
• Are copper applications capable of effectively managing bacterial wilt infections in dry beans? Bob Harveson, plant pathologist

Directions

To get to the Mitchell Ag Lab from highways 71 and 26 on the northwest side of Scottsbluff, drive 4 miles north on Highway 71 to Experiment Farm Road, then drive west for 1.5 miles.
