Market Journal: High Yields with Less Water

On this week's Market Journal host Doug Jose visits with Gary Hergert, UNL Extension nutrient management and soil quality specialist, about his research on limited irrigation production.  With good management in dry years, corn yields can be maximized with 14 inches of water in the Panhandle and as little as 8 inches in central Nebraska.

Also on this week's show:

  • Roger Elmore, Iowa State University extension corn specialist, recommends scouting corn fields now to detect any crop establishment problems.  Identifying potential causes of yield loss may be a lot harder at harvest when you start seeing the yield monitor dip.
  • Stephen Wegulo, extension plant pathologist, discusses what he found during a recent survey of wheat fields.
  • Feedlot owner Mike Briggs of Seward says food retailers purchased their needs for Memorial Day weekend ahead,  contributing to a decline in the cattle market now. Briggs recommends carefully budgeting breakevens for replacement purchases over the summer.
  • State Climatologist Al Dutcher says temperatures will be staying in the 70s and 80s with some areas of western and central Nebraska possibly seeing showers in the next week.
