Nebraska Farm and Ranch Production Expenses Rise to $30.4 Billion in 2024

Livestock, feed and rent drove Nebraska’s farm and ranch expenses up 7% from last year. On average, producers spent nearly $190,000 on livestock alone, more than triple the national average.

Farm and ranch production expenditures for Nebraska totaled $30.4 billion in 2024, up 7% from a year earlier, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Livestock expenses, the largest expenditure category, at $8.45 billion, increased 11% from 2023. Feed, the next largest total expense category at $3.98 billion, increased 15% from 2023. Rent, the third largest expense category, at $2.79 billion, increased 2% from 2023. 

Livestock expenses accounted for 28% of Nebraska's total production expenditures. Feed accounted for 13%, rent 9%, and farm services 8%.

The total expenditures per farm or ranch in Nebraska averaged $686,230 in 2024, up 9% from 2023. The livestock expense category was the leading expenditure, at $190,745 per operation, 3.8 times the national average. The average feed expenditure, at $89,842, was 1.2 times the national average. Rent expenditures, at $62,980 per operation, were 1.7 times the national average. Farm services expenditures per operation, at $54,176, were 0.98 times the national average. 

These results are based on data from Nebraska farmers and ranchers who participated in the Agricultural Resource Management Survey conducted by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers were contacted in January through April to collect 2024 farm and ranch expenses.
