Crop Progress: Planting Nears Completion, Stress Signs Build

Warm, dry conditions continued across Nebraska, supporting strong fieldwork progress. According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, there were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 22, 2025. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 13% very short, 34% short, 52% adequate, and 1% surplus, while subsoil moisture was rated 16% very short, 44% short, 38% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

  • Corn
    • Silking: 1%, equal to 1% last year and ahead of 0% for the five-year average. 
    • Condition: 1% very poor, 3% poor, 26% fair, 59% good, 11% excellent.
  • Soybean
    • Emerged: 96% — up from 94% last year, but on track for the 96% average.
    • Blooming: 1% — up from 4% last year, but on track for the 8% average.
    • Condition: 1% very poor, 4% poor, 30% fair, 58% good, 7% excellent.
  • Winter Wheat
    • Headed: 99% — slightly down from 100% last year but ahead of 97% average.
    • Condition: 10% very poor, 20% poor, 30% fair, 39% good, 1% excellent.
  • Oats
    • Headed: 77% — down from 82% last year and the five-year average.
    • Condition: 3% very poor, 5% poor, 60% fair, 31% good, 1% excellent.
  • Sorghum
    • Planted: 93% — well behind 97% last year and 98% average.
    • Condition: 1% very poor, 1% poor, 17% fair, 78% good, 3% excellent.
  • Dry Edible Beans
    • Planted: 94% — near 96% last year and the five-year average of 93%.
    • Emerged: 55% — behind 69% last year and 73% for the five-year average.
