With much of Nebraska in D2–D3 drought, early-season forages like oats will depend on one thing: moisture. Here’s what to watch right now.

As oats and other spring forages near the finish line for planting across Nebraska, early-season moisture is becoming a key factor in successful stand establishment — especially in drought-affected areas.

In this week’s N Field Observations, Nebraska Extension educators discuss what to watch as oats begin to emerge, including how moisture conditions can influence early growth.

Producers are encouraged to scout fields, check soil moisture and be prepared to respond as conditions develop in the coming weeks.
