Nebraska producers can learn about an innovative approach to reducing tillage in organic corn production during a free field day Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Cozad.
The event will highlight a system in which organic corn is planted directly into a living stand of alfalfa. The alfalfa helps suppress weeds while fixing nitrogen, potentially reducing the need for tillage and other inputs.
Nebraska grower Ben Miller, who has more than 10 years of experience with the system, will discuss the equipment, irrigation and management needed to grow corn in a living alfalfa mulch. Participants will also visit fields to see how the corn is performing.
The programs begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Cozad Elks Lodge. Miller’s presentation will be followed by the field tour. Lunch will be provided.
The field day is free, but registration is requested. Register online for the No-Till in Organic Corn Field Day.
The event is sponsored by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Nebraska Extension and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Transition to Organic Partnership Program.
The Cozad Elks Lodge is located at 820 J St., Cozad NE 69130.
