Cereal rye is the most commonly planted grass cover crop in Nebraska corn and soybean fields. When planted in the fall, it can suppress winter annual weeds like henbit, curly dock, field pennycress and marestail. If terminated after crop planting, cereal rye can also help suppress summer annual weeds such as Palmer amaranth.
N Field Observations has returned for the 2025 growing season with this new episode on cereal rye — hear insights from Nebraska Weed Management Specialist Amit Jhala on how to make this cover crop work for your operation.
