Farmers, crop consultants, researchers and agriculture professionals are invited to attend the 2026 Nebraska Flame Weeding Workshop on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center (ENREEC) near Mead, Nebraska. Hosted by the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, the full-day workshop will feature hands-on demonstrations and practical guidance based on over 15 years of university research on propane-fueled flame weeding.
Participants will learn about propane application rates for effective weed control, crop tolerance to flaming and the latest research on more than 20 weed species. The workshop will include live demonstrations of four-row flame weeders equipped with patented hoods for broadcast and banded applications, showcasing flame weeding in corn and soybean at multiple crop growth stages.
The program covers flame weeding recommendations for eight agronomic crops: field corn, sweet corn, popcorn, soybean, sorghum, sunflower, wheat and alfalfa. Local organic producers will discuss their on-farm experiences using flame weeding as part of their weed management programs.
Workshop presentations will be led by Stevan Knezevic, professor of agronomy and horticulture, and George Gogos, professor of mechanical engineering, whose collaborative work has resulted in over 20 peer-reviewed publications and numerous regional, national and international presentations, as well as a patented flame weeding system.
The workshop is limited to 40 people and costs $150 per person; registration includes workshop materials, lunch and a copy of the flame weeding manual.
