From rapid snowmelt to dry June forecasts, early indicators point to a tough summer for the Central U.S. — and a little-known temperature rule out of North Dakota could be a warning sign.

In the May 13 webinar for Second Tuesday at 9, Nebraska Extension Meteorologist Eric Hunt review current climate conditions and explain why this summer could pose challenges for much of the central U.S.

The first 12 minutes cover drought across the Western Corn Belt and Central Plains, contrasting with wetter conditions in the Southern Plains and Eastern Corn Belt. Hunt also touches on soil moisture trends, rapid snowmelt in the Rockies, and rangeland variability across the West.

In the second half, Hunt shifts to the forecast — which shows short-term moisture potential in the Central and Northern Plains — and explore why June could turn drier in the central U.S. He also explains the implications of the "Grand Forks 95°F rule" and what it might signal for late summer conditions.

A Nebraska Extension service, Second Tuesday at 9 is free to the public, and the next webinar will kick off at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 10. Register online to attend.
