Sharpen your mapping and data skills ahead of the Nebraska Precision Agriculture Conference by joining a one-day, hands-on workshop hosted by Nebraska Extension. The GIS Training for On-Farm Research event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025, at the Hall County Extension Office, 3180 W. Highway 34, Grand Island.
Designed for producers, crop consultants and educators, the workshop will help participants apply spatial tools to on-farm research projects. Attendees will learn practical workflows using the free QGIS software to create field boundaries, develop prescription maps and manage harvest yield data for on-farm research or variable-rate applications.
What You’ll Learn:
- Fundamentals of GIS: shapefiles, vector data, spatial management
- How to create and manage field and trial-plot boundaries
- Building prescription maps for variable-rate seeding or fertilizing
- Cleaning, summarizing and visualizing harvest yield data for on-farm trials
The workshop will feature a small-group format limited to 10 participants, ensuring plenty of hands-on time and individual support. By the end of the day, attendees will have developed the skills to apply GIS tools directly to their own data and fields — a practical advantage just ahead of the Nebraska Precision Agriculture Conference.
The registration fee is $120 and includes workshop materials. Participants are encouraged to register early due to limited capacity. Registration closes Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Attendees should bring their own laptop with QGIS Desktop 3.40 LTR installed, which can be downloaded in advance.
