Crop Progress: Wheat Harvest Nearly Complete as Corn and Soybean Advance Toward Maturity

With wheat harvest wrapped up, Nebraska growers are eyeing the finish line for corn, soybean and sorghum.

For the week ending Aug. 10, 2025, Nebraska’s field crops continued to advance under warm, mostly dry conditions that kept combines and irrigation systems busy. Many producers wrapped up wheat harvest while monitoring late-summer moisture needs for corn and soybean. Topsoil moisture rated 3% very short, 21% short, 66% adequate and 10% surplus, while subsoil moisture rated 6% very short, 23% short, 65% adequate and 6% surplus. Statewide, fieldwork averaged 5.1 days suitable for the week.

Field Crops Report:

  • Corn
    • Silking was 93% — behind 99% in 2024 and the five-year average of 97%.
    • Dough stage was 59% — behind 61% last year and 62% for the five-year average.
    • Dented was 15% — behind 23% last year but near the five-year average of 14%.
    • Condition rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 20% fair, 49% good and 27% excellent.
  • Soybean
    • Blooming was 88% — behind 97% in 2024 and 96% for the five-year average. 
    • Setting pods was 71% — behind 83% in 2024 and 80% for the five-year average.
    • Condition rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 23% fair, 49% good and 24% excellent.
  • Sorghum
    • Headed was 70% — behind 82% in 2024 and 74% for the five-year average.
    • Coloring was 8% — slightly ahead of 5% last year and equal to the five-year average.
    • Condition rated 1% very poor, 1% poor, 21% fair, 44% good and 33% excellent.
  • Winter Wheat
    • Harvested was 96% — near 99% in 2024 and 97% for the five-year average.
  • Oats
    • Harvested was 86% — behind 94% in 2024 and 92% for the five-year average.
    • Condition rated 16% very poor, 17% poor, 33% fair, 33% good and 1% excellent.
  • Dry Beans
    • Blooming was 81% — slightly ahead of 79% last year but behind 85% for the five-year average.
    • Setting pods was 57% — near 56% in 2024 and 58% for the five-year average.
    • Condition rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 24% fair, 43% good and 32% excellent.

Pasture and Range Report:

  • Condition rated 4% very poor, 21% poor, 29% fair, 38% good and 8% excellent.
