With harvest season underway in pockets of Nebraska, wheat planting preparations are advancing under mostly favorable conditions.

Nebraska crops made steady progress last week as warm, dry weather allowed harvest preparations to begin in some areas. Farmers had 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sept. 8, 2025. Topsoil moisture was rated 4% very short, 20% short, 69% adequate, 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 5% very short, 22% short, 67% adequate, 6% surplus.

  • Corn:
    • Dough stage: 92% — behind 96% last year and 97% for the five-year average.
    • Dented: 70% — behind 82% last year and the five-year average.
    • Mature: 23% — behind 29% last year and 28% for the five-year average.
    • Condition: 2% very poor, 4% poor, 18% fair, 50% good, 26% excellent.
  • Soybean:
    • Setting pods: 95% — behind 100% for both last year and the five-year average.
    • Dropping leaves: 14% — behind 22% last year and 33% for the five-year average.
