USDA Reports Confirm Big Corn and Soybean Harvests

Corn
Corn for grain production in Nebraska based on year-end surveys is estimated at 1.6 billion bushels, down 1% from 2013, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 179 bushels per acre is up 10 bushels from last year and ties the 2009 record yield. Farmers harvested 8.95 million acres of corn for grain, down 6% from 2013.
Nationally, corn for grain production was estimated at a record 14.2 billion bushels, down 1% from the November forecast, but 3% above the revised 2013 estimate. Average US yield was estimated at a record high 171 bushels per acre. This is down 2.4 bushels from the November forecast but 12.9 bushels above the revised 2013 average yield of 158.1 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 83.1 million acres, up slightly from the November forecast but down 5% from the revised 2013 acreage.
Soybean
Nebraska soybean production for 2014 totaled 289 million bushels, up 13% from 2013. Yield, at 54.0 bushels per acre, is up 0.5 bushel from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 5.35 million acres, is up 12% from 2013 and is the highest on record.
Nationally, soybean production in 2014 totaled a record 3.97 billion bushels, up slightly from the November forecast and up 18% from 2013. The average yield per acre is estimated at a record high 47.8 bushels, 0.3 bushel above the November forecast and 3.8 bushels above the 2013 yield. Harvested area is up 9% from 2013 to 83.1 million acres and is the highest on record.
Winter Wheat
Nebraska winter wheat seeded area for harvest in 2015 is estimated at 1.70 million acres, up from last year's seeded area of 1.55 million acres.
Sorghum
Nebraska sorghum for grain production in 2014 is estimated at 13.1 million bushels, up 35% from 2013. Yield, at 82 bushels per acre, is up 15 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 160,000 acres, is up 10% from 2013.
Nationally, sorghum grain production in 2014 is estimated at 433 million bushels, up 6% from the November forecast and up 11% from the revised 2013 grain production total. Planted area is estimated at 7.14 million acres, down 11% from last year's revised planted acres. Area harvested for grain, at 6.40 million acres, is down 2% from the 2013 revised harvested acres. Average grain yield, at 67.6 bushels per acre, is up 1.5 bushels from the previous forecast and up 8.0 bushels from last year.
Alfalfa
Nebraska alfalfa production of 3.4 million tons is up 41% from a year earlier. The record yield, at 4.1 tons per acre, is up 0.65 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested for dry hay, at 830,000 acres, is up 19% from 2013. Seedings of alfalfa during 2014 totaled 160,000 acres, up 14% from the year earlier. All other hay production, at 2.63 million tons, is up 4% from 2013. The record yield, at 1.50 tons per acre, is up 0.10 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested of other dry hay is 1.75 million acres, down 3% from a year ago. Total forage production from alfalfa and other hay was 6.19 million tons in 2014, up 22% from the previous year.
Proso Millet
Nebraska proso millet production in 2014 is estimated at 3.22 million bushels, down 30% from last year's production. Yield, at 29 bushels per acre, is down 3 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 111,000 acres, is down 22% from 2013.
Sunflower
Nebraska oil sunflower production in 2014 is 26.7 million pounds, up 34% from last year. Yield, at 1,160 pounds per acre, is up 310 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 23,000 acres, is down 2% from 2013. Non-oil sunflower production of 18.4 million pounds, is up 41% from last year. Yield, at 1,750 pounds per acre, is up 750 pounds from a year earlier and is the highest on record. Area harvested, at 10,500 acres, is down 19% from 2013.
Sugarbeet
Nebraska sugarbeet production of 1.34 million tons is up 2% from 2013. Yield, at 28.8 tons per acre, is down 0.90 ton from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 46,500 acres, is 5% more than 2013.
Dry Edible Bean
Nebraska dry edible bean production of 3.8 million hundredweight, is up 38% from a year ago. Yield, at 2,500 pounds per acre, is up 150 pounds from a year earlier and is the highest on record. Area harvested, at 152,000 acres, is up 30% from 2013.
Potato
Nebraska potato production is 6.44 million hundredweight, down 24% from last year. Yield, 435 hundredweight per acre, is down 25 hundredweight from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 14,800 acres, is down 19% from 2013.
