USDA: Nebraska Crop Conditions

For the week ending September 14, below normal temperatures coupled with rain in the east and light snow in western portions of the state slowed fieldwork activities, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Moisture accumulations across the southeastern third of the state were an inch or more with lesser amounts elsewhere. Frost was recorded during the week.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3% very short, 19% short, 71% adequate, and 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 8% very short, 24% short, 65% adequate, and 3% surplus.

Crop Condition

Winter wheat planting was 26% complete, ahead of 20% last year, but near 27% for the five-year average.

Corn conditions rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 19% fair, 51% good, and 22% excellent. Corn dented was 88%, equal to last year, but behind the average of 92%. Corn mature was 29%, ahead of 14% last year, but near 28% average. Nationally 79% of the corn crop has dented and 20% is mature (USDA National Crop Report).

Soybean conditions rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 20% fair, 54% good, and 19% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 25%, behind 33% last year, but near the average of 26%. Nationally 24% of the soybean crop had dropped its leaves.

Sorghum conditions rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 32% fair, 39% good, and 22% excellent. Sorghum coloring was 89%, ahead of 81% last year and the average of 76%. Sorghum mature was 10%, ahead of 3% last year, but near the average of 8%. Nationally, 36% of the sorghum crop was mature and 32% had been harvested.

Dry bean condition rated 2% very poor, 1% poor, 14% fair, 63% good, and 20% excellent. Dry beans setting pods was 98%. Dry beans dropping leaves was 76%, behind 89% last year, but ahead of the average of 66%. Dry beans harvested was 15%, behind 29% last year and the average of 23%.

Alfalfa hay conditions rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 28% fair, 52% good, and 12% excellent. Alfalfa hay fourth cutting was 40% complete, ahead of 34% last year, but behind the average of 47%.

Proso millet harvested was 4%, well behind 60% last year and 33% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 5% very poor, 8% poor, 33% fair, 46% good, and 8% excellent.
