Drew Lyon, Extension Dryland Cropping Systems Specialist at the Panhandle REC, Scottsbluff: Winter wheat seeding has begun at the higher elevations in the Panhandle. Soils are dry and grasshoppers are bountiful, but many growers are reluctant to delay planting because of fears of blowing soil from inadequate crop cover, as occurred last year when winter came to stay in mid-October.
