UNL CropWatch May 20, 2010: Field Updates
May 20, 2010
Douglas Anderson, Extension Educator in Keith, Arthur, and Perkins Counties: It's been rain, rain, and more rain. Most areas have received enough to keep farmers out of the field. Alfalfa and wheat are growing well, but very little corn is up. Planting was moving at warp speed, but field work was slowed by the rains.
Randy Pryor, Extension Educator in Saline County: Loose smut disease is developing in wheat due to our wet weather and the use of non-treated seed. Loose smut is easy to prevent with the use of treated seed. Wheat in southeast Nebraska is heading and in a few days will be beyond the time for fungicide application decisions. We also received a report of pill bugs eating soybeans in a field in Jefferson County.
