These Furnas County wheat variety plots near Arapahoe will provide growers an excellent opportunity to view and compare wheat varieties before ordering their seed for 2011. The Furnas County Field Tour is scheduled for 7 a.m. June 16.

Learn about new winter wheat varieties and consider which ones you'd like to plant this fall at one of several upcoming winter wheat tours sponsored by UNL Extension.

Participants can view UNL wheat field trials of 48 varieties at the rainfed locations and 32 varieties at the irrigated locations. The selection includes a couple varieties to measure progress in winter wheat breeding, many currently available varieties, recent releases, and test varieties that may be released later, depending on their field performance.

Meetings with each tour will cover the field performance of the varieties, latest recommendations on winter wheat production practices, including seeding dates; fertilizer use; insect, disease and weed management; fallow practices; and economics.
