Verbal or “handshake” farmland leases may seem informal, but Nebraska law treats them as year-to-year agreements with firm rules. If landowners or tenants want to end one, notice must be given well before the next lease year begins — and if you miss the Sept. 1 deadline, the lease automatically renews for another year. Knowing the timeline can prevent costly misunderstandings and keep everyone on the same page.
