Sorghum Hybrid Field Day Sept. 4 near Chester

The 2008 Sorghum Hybrid Plot Field Day will be held Thursday, Sept. 4 at the James Vorderstrasse farm near Chester. The event starts at 5 p.m. with a tour of the hybrid plot located one-fourth mile east of 5800 D Road. The plot is sponsored annually by the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Producers Association(NeGSPA), UNL Extension, the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, participating seed companies, and agribusiness."We'll have representatives from the commercial seed companies on hand to discuss their plot entries," said James Vorderstrasse, NeGSPA director and plot coordinator. "Farmers will be able to see and evaluate field performance for themselves."

A barbeque dinner featuring sorghum brownies for dessert will be served at 7 p.m.. The evening program will include an address by Ray Ward, owner of Ward Laboratories, and Paul Hay, UNL Extension Educator, to discuss best practices in returning CRP acres to row crop production.

"Nutrient requirements and tillage are issues that need careful consideration when putting CRP ground back into crop production," stated Vorderstrasse. "Dr. Ward and Paul Hay have extensive experience in successfully working with farmers to accomplish this."

The event will include a yield-guessing contest and door prizes.

Directions

The farm is one-fourth mile east of 5800 D Road or 2 miles north of Chester to D Road and one and three-fourths miles west. The plot is clearly marked with a 4-by-8 foot NeGSPA sign.
