Recent storms have left Nebraska corn vulnerable to bacterial diseases following wind, hail and sandblasting injury. In this episode of N Field Observations, Nebraska Extension Plant Pathologist Tamra Jackson-Ziems explains how wounds in corn tissue open the door for bacterial infections like Goss’s wilt, bacterial leaf streak and stalk rot. She shares key symptoms to scout for, including water-soaked lesions, dark freckling and distinct odors. While fungicides aren’t effective against these bacterial diseases, selecting resistant hybrids and consulting with agronomists is critical. For diagnosis, samples can be submitted to the UNL Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic.
