With development still lagging and wheat harvest behind schedule, Nebraska’s crops are feeling the midsummer stall. Get the full breakdown in this week’s Crop Progress report.

For the week ending July 21, 2025, there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Hot, dry conditions continued to stress Nebraska’s crops and delay development in many areas. Both corn silking and soybean blooming remained well behind their seasonal averages, and winter wheat harvest made limited progress over the past week. Meanwhile, soil moisture remained relatively stable, with topsoil moisture rated 5% very short, 26% short, 61% adequate and 8% surplus, and subsoil moisture rated 10% very short, 32% short, 54% adequate and 4% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

  • Corn
    • Silking reached 56% — behind 72% last year and 64% for the five-year average.
    • Dough stage reached 10% — ahead of 8% for the five-year average, but behind 17% last year.
    • Condition rated 22% excellent, 56% good, 18% fair, 3% poor and 1% very poor.
  • Soybean
    • Blooming reached 61% — behind 82% last year and 73% for the five-year average.
    • Setting pods reached 16% — behind 37% last year and 31% for the five-year average.
    • Condition rated 19% excellent, 54% good, 23% fair, 3% poor and 1% very poor.
  • Sorghum
    • Headed reached 14% — ahead of 13% last year and 15% for the five-year average.
    • Coloring reached 1% — pacing slightly ahead of last year and the five-year average.
    • Condition rated 4% excellent, 70% good, 25% fair, 1% poor and 0% very poor.
  • Winter wheat
    • Harvested reached 47% — behind 84% last year and 67% for the five-year average.
  • Oats
    • Harvested reached 49% — behind 56% last year but ahead of 46% for the five-year average.
    • Condition rated 4% excellent, 27% good, 36% fair, 17% poor and 16% very poor.
  • Dry edible beans
    • Condition rated 31% excellent, 25% good, 44% fair, 0% poor and 0% very poor.

  • Pasture and range conditions rated 3% excellent, 30% good, 41% fair, 20% poor and 6% very poor.
