Crop Progress: Corn and Soybean Progress Outpaces 2024, but Drought Signals Deepen

Dry weather has accelerated planting progress ahead of 2024, but moisture reserves — and wheat and pasture conditions — have continued their slow, steady decline.

For the week ending June 1, 2025, there were 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 15% very short, 34% short, 49% adequate and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 22% very short, 43% short, 35% adequate and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 28% fair, 54% good and 14% excellent. Corn planted was 98%, ahead of 95% last year and near 97% for the five-year average. Emerged was 90%, up from 76% last year and the 84% average.

Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 30% fair, 55% good and 12% excellent. Soybean planted was 95%, up from 89% last year and ahead of the 93% average. Emerged was 77%, up from 61% last year and the five-year average of 70%.

Winter wheat condition rated 26% very poor, 22% poor, 29% fair, 20% good and 3% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 80%, ahead of 69% last year and the 56% average. 

Sorghum planted was 38%, behind 49% last year and 59% average.

Oats condition rated 3% very poor, 4% poor, 58% fair, 31% good, and 4% excellent. Emerged was 94%, compared to last year and the five-year average of 95%. Oats headed was 20%, behind 34% a year ago and near the 21% five-year average. 

Dry edible beans planted was 63%, well ahead of 27% last year and 30% for the five-year average.  

Pasture and Range Report:
Pasture and range conditions rated 19% very poor, 37% poor, 24% fair, 19% good and 1% excellent.
