Old crop corn stocks in all positions on September 1 totaled 196 million bushels, up 18% from September 1, 2008, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. Of the total stocks, 67 million bushels are stored on farm, up 40% from a year ago. Off-farm holdings of 129 million bushels are up 9% from 2008.

Nationally, old crop corn stocks in all positions on September 1, 2009 totaled 1.67 billion bushels, up 3% from September 1, 2008. Of the total stocks, 608 million bushels are stored on farms, up 22% from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 1.07 billion bushels, are down 5% from a year ago. The June-August 2009 indicated disappearance is 2.59 billion bushels, compared with 2.40 billion bushels during the same period last year.

Soybeans. Old crop soybeans stored in all positions totaled 8.2 million bushels, down 45% from last year. On-farm stocks of 1.3 million bushels are down 38% from 2008 and the lowest since 1977. Off-farm stocks of 6.9 million bushels are down 46% from last year’s holdings.

Nationally, old crop soybeans stored in all positions on September 1, 2009 totaled 138 million bushels, down 33% from September 1, 2008. Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 35.1 million bushels, down 25% from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 103 million bushels, are down 35% from last September. Indicated disappearance for June-August 2009 totaled 458 million bushels, down 3% from the same period last year.

Based on an analysis of end-of-marketing year stock estimates, disappearance data for exports and crushings, and farm program administrative data, the 2008 soybean production is revised to 2.97 billion bushels, up 7.83 million bushels from the previous estimate.

Harvested soybean area is revised up 40,000 acres to 74.7 million acres. The 2008 yield, at 39.7 bushels per acre, is up 0.1 bushel from the previous estimate.

Wheat. Wheat stored in all positions totaled 80.2 million bushels, up 36% from a year ago. On-farm stocks of 12 million bushels are up 50% from 2008. Off-farm stocks, at 68.2 million bushels, are up 34% from last year.

Nationally, all wheat stored in all positions on September 1, 2009 totaled 2.22 billion bushels, up 19% from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 840 million bushels, up 32% from last September. Off-farm stocks, at 1.38 billion bushels, are up 12% from a year ago. The June-August 2009 indicated disappearance is 661 million bushels, down 30 from the same period a year earlier.

Sorghum. Old crop sorghum stored in all positions totaled 3.2 million bushels, down 55% from last year. On-farm stocks of 600 thousand bushels are up 50% from a year ago while off-farm stocks, at 2.6 million bushels, are down 61% from 2008 and the lowest since 1996.

Nationally, old crop grain sorghum stored in all positions on September 1, 2009 totaled 54.7 million bushels, up 4% from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 4.40 million bushels, are up 24% from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 50.3 million bushels, are up 2% from September 1, 2008. The June-August 2009 indicated disappearance from all positions is 47.5 million bushels, down 2% from the same period last year.
