60 Harvests: Changes I Have Seen

As one Nebraska farmer and longtime educator looks back on more than 60 harvests, he reflects on how much has changed — and why soil stewardship matters now more than ever.

From the Nebraska Soil Health Coalition, this reflection from a retired Professor of Practice at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln looks back on more than 60 harvests in Nebraska agriculture and the dramatic changes that have shaped the landscape — from evolving seed genetics and machinery to tighter planting windows and growing soil challenges. Yet through all this change, he notes, two constants still drive every season: the soil beneath our feet and the weather above it. His perspective offers a grounded reminder that practical soil health practices — cover crops, no-till and thoughtful rotations — remain some of the strongest tools for keeping Nebraska farms productive for the next generation.
