Another period of variable rain over the last week. At the Colfax County Office, we measured approximately 1.20 inches over the previous week with higher amounts to the north. Shell Creek resulted in localized flooding in parts of Platte and Colfax Counties.

Planting appears to have wrapped on the season; however, the potential exists for some replant for areas that experienced flooding or severe weather over the past week.

I have heard in some parts of the state that last year’s drought and a warmer winter has led to some grasshopper complications in forage field sites. While I have not observed that in the local region, it could be possible in localized locations. Nebraska Extension Educator Ben Beckman has an article on CropWatch discussing these observations.

Herbicide applications are underway in the area to address emerging weed concerns. Always remember to scout field sites for possible insect or plant diseases issues and never assume protection.
