NET Awards Grant for Bazile GMA Nitrate Reduction Efforts
The Nebraska Environmental Trust awarded $228,500 to the Bazile Groundwater Management Area (BGMA) for research and developing demonstration sites in the BGMA groundwater nitrate reduction project.
Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and four northeast Natural Resource Districts — Lower Elkhorn, Upper Elkhorn, Lower Niobrara and Lewis Clark — created a plan in 2013 for increasing education and incentives for local communities and agricultural producers to implement best management practices for reducing loss of nitrogen to the water.
To further this effort, BGMA has partnered with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and the Nebraska Water Center, part of the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska, to design the proposed project.
This project will develop three advanced nitrogen and water management research and demonstration sites, conduct annual field days and educational meetings, and provide an analysis of the success of various water and nitrogen application methods used.
