Most Crop Conditions Steady; Dry Edibles Improve
Cool, wet conditions dominated the weather pattern for the week ending August 13, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Most crop condition reports were similar to those reported last week, except for dry edible beans, which improved in each category.
Topsoil moisture rated 14% very short, 38% short, 47% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 14% very short, 39% short, 47% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Corn condition rated 4% (5%) very poor, 9% (11%) poor, 24% (25%) fair, 46% (43%) good, and 17% (16%) excellent. Corn dough was 65% (40%) , behind 72% last year, and near the five-year average of 66%. Dented was 14% (3%), near 16% last year, and behind 19% average.
Soybean condition rated 4% (4%) very poor, 8% (9%) poor, 27% (29%) fair, 50% (48%) good, and 11% (10%) excellent. Soybeans blooming was 97% (94%), equal to both last year and average. Setting pods was 78% (65%), near 79% last year and the five-year average of 80%.
Sorghum condition rated 3% (3%) very poor, 3% (3%) poor, 30% (30%) fair, 50% (51%) good, and 14% (13%) excellent. Sorghum headed was 77%, behind 85% last year, but equal to average. Coloring was 12%, behind 24% last year, and near the average of 13%.
Oats harvested was 95%, ahead of 88% last year, and near the average of 93%.
Alfalfa condition rated 4% very poor, 13% poor, 33% fair, 39% good, and 11% excellent. Alfalfa third cutting was 77% complete, near 74% last year, and ahead of the average of 65%. Fourth cutting was 16% complete, near 15% last year.
Dry edible beans condition rated 5% (11%) very poor, 9% (19%) poor, 13% (19%) fair, 49% (36%) good, and 24% (15%) excellent. Dry edible beans blooming was 93%, equal to last year. Setting pods was 85%, near 83% last year, and ahead of the average of 80%.
Pasture and range conditions rated 6% very poor, 23% poor, 38% fair, 28% good, and 5% excellent.
