Ag Land Lease Workshops Set for this Fall

Ag Land Lease Workshops Set for this Fall

The Landlord/Tenant Cash Lease Workshops will be offered across Nebraska this November and December. These workshops are designed to help landlords and tenants develop a lease that is right for both parties while maintaining positive farm leasing relations.

Workshop topics:

  • Latest information about land values and cash rental rates for the area and state
  • Lease communication: Determining appropriate information sharing for both the tenant and landlord
  • Lease termination, including terminating handshake or verbal leases
  • Review of common lease provisions with emphasis on common provision questions
  • Legal issues related to land ownership — basic ownership structurers and what they mean
  • A quick look at how entity ownership affects legal and financial risk management
  • Ownership transition
  • State/federal resources for beginning farmers and ranchers, including the Nebraska Beginning Farmer Program and the federal direct and grant farm ownership program
  • Other topics, like irrigation systems, hay rent, pasture rental agreements, and grain bin rental will be covered as time allows

Nebraska Extension Educators will present these workshops. It is most helpful if both the tenant and landlord can attend together. It is also helpful if spouses attend. Everyone is welcome to one or both workshops.

The free workshops are sponsored by the North Central Risk Management Education Center. Registration is requested to ensure enough handouts are prepared. Register by calling the host county of the workshop you would like to attend at least three days prior to the event.

The workshops have been held extensively across Nebraska for the past few years with over 3,300 attending. The vast majority of both landlords and tenants say they find the information to be very helpful in improving communications, setting rental terms, and learning about the use of flex lease provisions. As crop budgets tighten, it is even more important to attend and listen to the latest discussion about leasing issues.

Flexible Lease Workshops Also Available

Flexible Farmland Lease Workshops will be offered in the afternoon following the Landlord/Tenant Cash Lease Workshops at six locations. The Flexible Lease Workshops will begin at 1:30 .m. Flexible leases provisions are gaining popularity across the state as a way to share the risk of crop production.

The workshops are free. They will be held at York, West Point, near Mead, Scottsbluff, Norfolk, and Lincoln. Call the appropriate Extension Office to register at least three days prior to the workshop. You can register for one or both workshops on the same day.

The goal of the Flexible Lease Workshops is to provide information on:

  • what a flex lease is
  • how to set up a flex lease, and
  • common flex lease provisions.

The workshop is designed to let landlords and tenants be as simple or complex as they want to be when setting up flexible leases.

FL: Locations where flexible lease workshop will also be held in the afternoon, starting at 1:30 p.m.
