For the week ending May 4, 2014, precipitation in the form of snow in the extreme northwest and rain across most other areas of the state slowed fieldwork, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Amounts of 1 inch of rain were common across the north and east while central counties received lesser amounts. By week's end, soils had dried and fieldwork was widespread. Temperatures averaged 3 to 6 degrees below normal in most areas. 

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 13% very short, 38% short, 48% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 16% very short, 45% short, 39% adequate, and 0 surplus.

• Winter wheat condition rated 3% very poor, 16% poor, 35% fair, 42% good, and 4% excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 21%, ahead of 8% last year but behind the five-year average of 39%.
• Oats condition rated 1% very poor, 19% poor, 41% fair, 38% good, and 1% excellent. Oats planting was 94% complete, ahead of 82% last year but near the average of 91%. Oats emergence was at 70%, well ahead of 36% last year and the average of 62%.
• Corn planting was 44% complete, ahead of 12% last year but near the average of 45%. Corn emergence was at 7%, ahead of 2% last year but equal to the average.
• Soybean planting was at 11%, ahead of 1% last year but equal to the average.
• Sorghum planting was at 3%, ahead of 1% last year but equal to the average.
• Pasture and range condition rated 13% very poor, 15% poor, 46% fair, 25% good, and 1% excellent.
