USDA NASS: Crop Progress and Condition

Harvest of corn (7% complete) and soybean (6% complete) were just getting underway Monday when USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service reported on Nebraska crop conditions and progress.

 Topsoil moisture supplies rated 4% very short, 23 short, 70% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 8% very short, 25% short, 65% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Field Crops Report

Winter wheat planting was 78% complete, ahead of 63% last year and 68% for the five-year average. Forty-three pecent of the crop had emerged, ahead of 26% last year and the 31% average.

Corn conditions rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 19% fair, 51% good, and 22% excellent. Corn dented was 97%, near 99% for both last year and the average. Corn mature was 63%, near 60% last year and the 66% average. Corn harvested was 7%, near 8% last year, but behind the average of 16%. Nationally, corn maturity at 60% was on track with last year and slightly behind the five-year average of 70% mature at this point in the season. Harvest, at 7% complete nationally, was behind the five-year average of 23%.

Soybean conditions rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 20% fair, 54% good, and 20% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 76%, behind 82% last year, but near the average of 77%. Soybeans harvested was 6%, behind 12% last year and the 17% average. Nationally, soybean harvest was at 10% complete was slightly behind the five year-average of 17% complete at this point in the season.

Sorghum conditions rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 32% fair, 39% good, and 22% excellent. Sorghum coloring was 97%, near last year's 99%, but ahead of the average of 93%. Sixty percent of the sorghum crop had matured, ahead of 46% last year and the average of 43%. Sorghum harvested was 2%, equal to last year and near the 4% average.

Dry bean conditions rated 3% very poor, 1% poor, 15% fair, 62% good, and 19% excellent. Dry beans dropping leaves was 95%, near 97% last year and equal to the average. Dry beans harvested was 64%, near 68% last year and 67% average.

Alfalfa hay conditions rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 29% fair, 52% good, and 12% excellent. Alfalfa hay fourth cutting was 77% complete, near 73% last year and 79% average.

Proso millet harvested was 77%, near last year's 78% last year, but ahead of the five-year average of 62%.

Pasture and range conditions rated 6% very poor, 7% poor, 33% fair, 45% good, and 9% excellent.
