Clear skies and near normal temperatures allowed corn harvest to make good progress for the week ending Nov. 2, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Some areas of the state saw a hard freeze.

Grain moisture levels in standing corn remained above safe storage levels in a number of areas. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 6% very short, 30% short, 63% adequate and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 27% short, 65% adequate and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report

Winter wheat conditions rated 0% very poor 2% poor, 19% fair, 71% good, and 8% excellent. Ninety-six percent of the crop had emerged, near 97% last year and the five-year average of 93%.

Corn conditions rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 17% fair, 52% good, and 24% excellent. Sixty percent of the crop had been harvested, behind 69% last year and the five-year average of 71%. Nationally, 65% of the crop was in, compared to just 46% last week. This compares to last year's 71% at this time and the five-year average of 73%.

Soybean harvest was 95% complete, near last year's 97% and the average of 93%. Nationally, 83% of the soybean harvest was in, compared to 85% at this time last year or an average of 83% for 2009-2013.

Sorghum harvest was 71% complete, near 75% last year and the average of 67%.
